{"id":8337,"date":"2019-11-15T13:32:50","date_gmt":"2019-11-15T13:32:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.avolutionsoftware.com\/?p=8337"},"modified":"2024-05-08T13:09:43","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T12:09:43","slug":"how-to-collect-enterprise-architecture-data-the-smart-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.avolutionsoftware.com\/news\/how-to-collect-enterprise-architecture-data-the-smart-way\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Collect Enterprise Architecture Data the Smart Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"feat_text\">Enterprise architecture is often an exercise in knowing what data you need to focus on in order to move as quickly as possible toward providing value for the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Taking a rigorous approach to data gathering and cleansing can play a big part in setting your EA team up for success.<\/p>\n<p>James Bashford, Technical Architect at listed investment manager Man Group outlined <strong>four useful rules of thumb<\/strong> to guide architects in deciding which data they should focus on.<\/p>\n<p>Being selective in data-gathering will help architects provide the quickest time to value and support business activities efficiently.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>What NOT to do when collecting data for enterprise architecture<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Try not to collect every field imaginable<\/strong>: you\u2019ll be there for years<\/li>\n<li><strong>Try to avoid freeform text<\/strong>: because you won\u2019t be able to use the data for high-level analysis or calculations. Step away from the detail and view the estate as a whole. Use drop-downs and pick-lists instead.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t collect data you don\u2019t have a use for:<\/strong> you always have to ask \u201cwhy?\u201d. If you don\u2019t have a use for it, excess data can complicate and slow-down what you\u2019re trying to do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t attempt to collect data that you have no source for:<\/strong> don\u2019t try to collect \u2013 for instance \u2013 sentiment towards an application you have never gone through an exercise to survey about, it is likely to trip up what you\u2019re trying to achieve.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bashford also discussed how the enterprise architecture team at Man Group rates applications quickly for <strong>Risk<\/strong>, <strong>Confidentiality <\/strong>and<strong> Recovery Times<\/strong> (Availability), supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avolutionsoftware.com\/news\/guide-to-graph-analytics-no-code-algorithms-tools\/\">algorithms in ABACUS<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s important to be able to do this at speed as an Enterprise Architecture and IT department without leaning on the business,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"feat_text\">Bashford presented on &#8220;<em>Streamlining Application Rating and Categorization with Algorithms<\/em>\u201d at Avolution\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avolutionsoftware.com\/about\/events\/digital-enterprise-architecture-summit\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Digital Enterprise Architecture Summit<\/span><\/a>, held in November 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>More on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avolutionsoftware.com\/solutions\/enterprise-architecture-collaboration-data-management\/\">collaborative data management<\/a> in ABACUS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Enterprise architecture is often an exercise in knowing what data you need to focus on in order to move as quickly as possible toward providing value for the business.
